44 - A.I. - Artificial Ignorance

This happens to me all the damn time. I love the Halo franchise but the soldiers are so fundamentally stupid that it boggles the mind! And I love that after one of them hops in front of my stream of bullets they others ask me what I'm thinking.

I know I'm not the only one who has this problem.

Comments

LOL
One time on Halo 3 campaign an elite through a grenade and another jumped in its way killing both the allied elites it was sort of funny but stupid at the same time.

123@123.net
i know. the ally marines are damn stupid i was trying to kill a wraith from distance with a a gauss warthog but marines kept getting in and driving to the wraith and it killed me and i was like, f**k u marines ur so retarded!
#45 - hahahaha - 03/21/2009 - 17:22
Yes
I do find it funny how the enemy AI can improve, yet the AI for the Marines seems...behind.
#44 - Zodiac - 09/09/2008 - 17:53
Too true
Yeah that happens to me alll the time. When I'm driving a tank. When I'm about to shoot a brute with a rocket launcher. All the time. We lost aproxamitly 400 men while I was playing Halo because they walked in front of me when I fired.
#43 - Retal - 08/03/2008 - 15:15
i hate this.
i was playing "the storm" where ou have the marines with rocket launchers. i got s rocket launcher took a mongoose up the elevator thing to one of the cranes was about to shoot the rocket launcher and a bloody marine jumps infront of me killing me!!!
#42 - estarinuta - 05/04/2008 - 05:27
hahaha sucker
nice and funny
#41 - Creed - 04/25/2008 - 18:17
i know!!!
it has happened before to me and it isnt just the bots!!! its those retarded noobs in multiplayer. They grab a strong weapon then think they are the king of the map! Then when they get between you and the blue team (think like ur on red team and so is the noob) and then when they get betrayed by you, they go and abuse the (censored) out of you and starts betraying you, then wonders why both red team and blue team are shooting him and why he gets kicked!?!?!

Yeah and also i was once shooting an elite from a hill once when a marine got in my way... then three other marines start shooting me!!! (i then just got out the p.p. and punched them. they stoped) Oh and to those who think that the fp animation on halo 1 for the plasma pistol when meleeing is in the right hand... open your eyes, retards!!! the p.p. goes to the left with the left hand and then the right hand comes down alone.

remember... PUNCH THOSE MARINES EVERYTIME THEY GO OFF AT U WHEN THEY JUMP IN THE WAY!!!
Yeah
Every time, I was on this one level and I would try to take a shot with a sniper rifle. Johnson would get in the way. And of course, it was right after I pulled the trigger. and of course, they would all come after me.
#39 - JPR - 02/17/2008 - 03:42
Love the comic! Just read the entire archive!

Just a few suggestions - I found it hard to keep track of who was speaking or if I knew who was speaking it didnt look like they were talking even with a bubble - open mouths indicate someone speaking ;)

Speach bubbles dont require huge arrow to point to the speakers, but they somehow add more life and energy to the picture - try doing up a comic strip with your current and varrient speach bubbles and see what kind of response you get.

I think somthing like the following style would look good in your comic!

Keep up the great work!!!

#35 - chris119 - 01/19/2008 - 00:42
noooooooooooooo

NO DUDE< U MADE MIRANDA INTO A NASTY BITCH< SHE USED TO BE HOTTATA
#34 - uwannano - 01/18/2008 - 22:08
"I'm afraid that's not true. It's just a lot harder to do is all."
Yes, it can be difficult...unless you've modded your weapons in Halo 1. Or just decided to shoot Johnson enough times.

What's interesting is that in AotCR, killing several marines at the bottom of the canyon with a rocket launcher (where the warthog and Wraith are) while you're still at the top of the bridge will still cause them to turn on you once you reach the bottom, because the AI hasn't reverted back even between load zones.

Very awesome throwback comic, ZZoMBiE13...
#33 - PlasmaFire - 01/18/2008 - 16:44
?
Who the frick is zombie22?
#32 - ZZoMBiE13 - 01/18/2008 - 16:20
oh, oh, and wait a bit...
i just forgot. i laughed VERY hard when i heard your part (zombie22) that you blowed up in the scarab, yet the marines wanted to kill you, and they started shooting your buddy before they shot you. man, you should make these in to the comic too! (but with you wearing a different type or cour of armor so we can tell its you) and be like a short look in to your and other stuff in halo. it would be fun. what you say?
#31 - chris119 - 01/18/2008 - 15:14
WELL, ...
i must tell this was really funnny. i can relate too. mostly on halo 1. i was at a mission on level halo, and suddenly, BAM! as i drive the worthog, i instead of going forward, i presssed reverse, and the car went backwards killing 2 marines. then i was sorry, and saying sorry, but then, 2 levels later, i (accidentally) threw a grenade, and the whole place went boom, also driving the place full of aliens, and... marines.

anyway, the most ways i got marines dead was by driving the warthog. its not that i have bad skills (really) i just like to drive like crazy. i guess noone would drive with me on multiplayer.lol
(i once drove a warthog up in a rock, and an other time at a tree, too bad i couldnt save it)
#30 - chris119 - 01/18/2008 - 15:08
Haha.
The hilarious thing is that this happens more for me in Matchmaking.

I've actually never had any trouble with Marines. Ever. The only thing I never let them do is drive while I'm in the vehicle, but they're pretty good at doing what I need them to. It's gotten to the point where I try to keep as many of them alive as possible.

What's funny is that they're tremendously formidable when they turn on you. It's fun to start off Crow's Nest, kill a few, and see how long you can hold out for.
#29 - Amalgs - 01/18/2008 - 14:53
At least they don't turn on you like in Halo 1
I'm afraid that's not true. It's just a lot harder to do is all. But I've accidentally blown up a full Warthog and had the troops start shooting at me. And one time, while driving the APC Warthog, I got knocked off the map as the Scarab was exploding on "The Storm". For some reason they counted that as ME killing four other troops and they started attacking my buddy who was playing co-op with me. I laughed my ass off as he got killed too. It was hilarious.
#28 - ZZoMBiE13 - 01/18/2008 - 13:57
Get off the road, ya Sunday drivers!!
What's really annoying is when they get in vehicles, and just drive around as they please with no regard to your own safety. I can't even count the number of times I've been fighting and gotten splattered by some joy-riding Sunday driver in a Warthog. But something in me still feels bad "getting them out of the way." It's OK, they usually get themselves killed before too long anyway. At least they don't turn on you like in Halo 1...
#27 - ZeroGFrame - 01/18/2008 - 12:14
And it really blows when I give a rocket to a marine only to have him kill every other marine around him...

to Halo Buff: Halo 1's Warthog actually HAS a brake, just hit the A button.

#26 - ZackDark - 01/18/2008 - 10:14
They have no respect
That happening is understandable, but atleast it doesn't bother me. I just watch where I park myself as I start sniping or whatever, which has kept me from killing my buddies so far.

The only thing about the AI that has bothered me since Halo 2 is that it never apologizes for hitting friendlies. They seem like such rude bastards that this alone makes me wanna put them to sleep for good, so they wouldn't be hurting anyone else.

It was something that really made the marines likeable for me in the first Halo...
#25 - The Warhead - 01/18/2008 - 08:39
humm..
I think that the marine's ai in halo 3 is good, but the ones in halo 1 and 2 made a lot of mistakes. So in halo 3 until now i've never had a problem.
realy a great comic keep up good work!!!
#24 - giov - 01/18/2008 - 08:36
agreed
stupid marines
#23 - zhenoob - 01/18/2008 - 07:26
That has never happened to me before. BUt i usally kill the wounded marines and then kill the rest. :)
#22 - Spartan 117 - 01/18/2008 - 07:22
PsiMatrix
I liked it when Yahtzee talked about the marines driving skills. Running headlong into a rock, etc, etc.

Good stuff.

I rarely agree with a word the guy says but Zero Punctuation is always entertaining just the same.
#21 - ZZoMBiE13 - 01/18/2008 - 02:54
What a bunch of Cream Slices
As one less favourable reviewer quoted about friendly NPCs in another game - they're about as much use as a cream slice, less in fact.

For Halo 3 he described them as pants-on-head retarded and I'd agree with that.

Sierra 117 for example had me being blasted at by Jackals and the ally NPCs run inbetween me and the Jackals while we're firing away at each other and then they have the cheek to complain about my shooting.

And they wonder why it didn't make Game of the Year.

On another note it means the co-op campaign is far more interesting. I had a fun few days doing the campaign with a friend and we managed to make it through on Legendary. Most of the ally NPCs died on the way but it was far more fun with some human company (accurate since I played Arbi).
#20 - PsiMatrix - 01/17/2008 - 22:52
laser
It's even worse when the laser's just finished charging and you can't stop it, ant then they run in front of you and get a laser beam through the head. At least I still hit the enemy though.
#19 - Spartan F07 - 01/17/2008 - 21:45
Hmmmm...
It looks like you used the same template for Miranda as you did for Cortana...
Hmmmm...
#18 - brian - 01/17/2008 - 21:14
If I want to keep the marines, ODSTs, and Contractors out of my line of fire, all I do is give one of them a Powerful Weapon that has one round left in it. (They're better shots with a Sniper rifle than you'd think.)

Fortunately they are smart enough to know that if you give them a Rocket Launcher or a Fuel Rod Gun, and you're in a vehicle, that they should ride Shotgun.
#17 - SlayerMan118 - 01/17/2008 - 20:38
Actually, this has never happened to me. Ever.
#16 - Sephirose - 01/17/2008 - 20:27
Lol
Lol, I know what you mean. The marines are so stupid. When I throw a grenade, they jump right into it. When I'm in a vehicle, they jump right in front of it.
#15 - Cooloo40 - 01/17/2008 - 20:17
But...
That Artificial Ignorance is what makes the campaign so great! It provides endless laughs that only idiotic marines from the future can deliver, and as you know, "[they] deliver."
#14 - Digipatd - 01/17/2008 - 20:02
Personal Experience
Once, while playing the "Halo" level in Halo 1, I was on top of the structure where the first group of marines is campin out. Right before I pulled the trigger on my pistol to kill a Jackal, a Navy technician placed his head right in front of my reticle, and screamed "I'm a cowardly fool!" I bout killed him, too.
#13 - pittofdoom117 - 01/17/2008 - 18:58
Fun. Ny.
Great comic! Though that doesn't happen to me very often in Halo 1.
#12 - Wanderhome - 01/17/2008 - 18:46
Lol, so true. This happened once and all the other marines started freaking out lol. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw the grunts that stick themselves with plasmas and run into me(Stick themselves?).
#11 - Me - 01/17/2008 - 18:20
Suicidal Marines
I was just playing Halo 1 last night (ya still need to get a 360) I had marines GRANADING me all throughout the Truth and Reconcilliation level. Happend about 6 times. Then the go and jump infront of the warthog (which we all know dosent have an ebrake in 1) and yell at me to watch where I'm going! I feel your pain, Zombie.
#10 - Halo Buff - 01/17/2008 - 17:11
haha! thats so true. {hint for all: never give marines fuel rod cannons if your not in a hog}
#9 - Rex - 01/17/2008 - 17:10
haha
Although i don't appreciate all the anti-marine comments. they are always good to have around.
#8 - Nick - 01/17/2008 - 16:58
killathon
you no what you do you just take out every marine in battle no need for them
#7 - drewpulido - 01/17/2008 - 16:55
Only the Marines
Only the Marines can get away with having tiny dot eyes, especially when you make them look enthusiastic about greeting MC like that. :P
#6 - Stormfury - 01/17/2008 - 16:54
Miranda
We need a Miranda Cortana calendar spread, doooo iitttttttttt.
#5 - BunnyFat - 01/17/2008 - 16:18
Too True
They're like the kamikaze Grunts, only in reverse.
#4 - Kora \'Morhek - 01/17/2008 - 15:59
